Misteri d´Elx (Mystery Play of Elche)
August 11 - August 16
The Mystery Play of Elche is the only medieval play which has been kept alive until today thanks to a privilege granted by Pope Urban VIII (1632). It is divided into two acts, it takes place in two days, and it is entirely chanted. Its text is written in Valencian and its music includes melodies derived from the Gregorian repertoire, with Renaissance composers and Baroque or even later additions.
The Festa (the Mystery Play) was declared a National Monument in 1931 and a Festivity of International Tourist Interest in 1980. In 1990 it received the High Award of the Regional Government of Valencia and in 2001 the UNESCO included it on its list of Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
The two acts of the Mystery Play are traditionally performed on the afternoons of 14th and 15th August in the Basilica of Santa Maria. These performances have free entrance. Dress rehearsals are also held there on the 11th, 12th and 13th August, when both acts are staged together, although with a short interval between them. To attend these rehearsals it is necessary to buy a ticket in advanced.
There are also other special performances in years ended in an even number. They take place at the end of October (dress rehearsals), and on the 1st November the full play is performed.
